Partnering with our Mining Partners

In addition to our own practices and actions, Triple Flag seeks to contribute to a responsible and sustainable mining ecosystem by partnering with our counterparties and sharing our experience and networks to advance mutual ESG priorities.

When possible, Triple Flag seeks to partner with our mining partners to invest in important local priorities and build skills and capacities needed to benefit from opportunities at the mine. Our focus to date has been on education and economic participation, as shown in our flagship partnerships with Royal Bafokeng Platinum in South Africa and Northparkes in Australia. In future, these mutual ESG priorities could also include decarbonization, innovation and/or diversity and inclusion.

Triple Flag can provide further value to our mining partners by making connections between them and our networks to address emerging ESG issues and opportunities and facilitate learning and continuous improvement. In this way, we aim to be a catalyst for continual improvement and transformative change within the mining sector.

Royal Bafokeng Platinum

In partnership with RBPlat, Triple Flag has committed to investing US$100,000 annually towards a bursary program that will support, over the life of the asset, more than 50 students through their entire post-secondary education. This will also provide these students with employment opportunities at the mine site upon completion of their program. [In 2020, Triple Flag supported 6 students through their academic studies. Of the 4 students that graduated at the end of the academic year, 3 have accepted positions with RBPlat entering into their graduate program. The 2 remaining students will continue their studies in 2021, in addition to 8 new bursary students awarded new bursaries.]

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Triple Flag is further funding a one-time US$225,000 distance learning initiative approved by the South African Department of Basic Education which RBPlat is implementing. The Virtual Classroom Distance Learning solution will assist in delivering daily lessons to Grade 7 & 12 learners on personal smart devices. All software and hardware will be integrated, enabling the teacher to control the technological aspects of the lesson from a single interface. This will support the Department of Basic Education to create simple and easy to use facilities that are accessible to all students. The standardized approach will ensure that students are able to continue their studies even when they are unable to physically attend school. The infrastructure and technology will be sustainable beyond the COVID-pandemic. This initiative will directly benefit over 775 teachers and learners in 6 doorstep community schools, each year.

Northparkes

In Australia, Triple Flag recently reached an agreement with Northparkes to invest A$50,000 annually for scholarships [4 bursaries awarded in 2021], community initiatives, and recreational sport programs in the communities surrounding the mine. These investments are aligned with priorities identified by these communities and awarded following an application process and determined by a panel of community and company representatives.

Investing in our community

Our team is proud to support the work of a number of charitable organizations that support the health and well-being of communities and ecosystems. In 2020, Triple Flag and its employees contributed more than $50,000 to local and global charities of importance to our board, leadership, and staff.

Trees of Joy

Since inception, Triple Flag has been a strong advocate for and supporter of Children’s Wish Foundation (now Make-A-Wish Canada), specifically the Trees of Joy initiative. Trees of Joy inspires teams to create a little holiday magic for children diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. The funds raised help to grant the next heartfelt wish. Aside from donating our own tree each year to a deserving child (and their family), Triple Flag has brought together numerous local mining companies, financial institutions and various vendors to take part in this great cause. http://globalnews.ca/video/7498421/creating-holiday-magic-for-children-diagnosed-with-life-threatening-illnesses

Triple Flag makes annual contributions to organizations identified by its team.

Triple Flag supports Young Mining Professionals (“YMP”), a growing international association of mining professionals based in major mining centres across the world, that share the goal of advancing the global profile and leadership of the mining and exploration industry. In 2019 Triple Flag sponsored the YMP Scholarship Fund Charity Golf Tournament.
