Responsibility

ESG values are core to Triple Flag. As miners first and foremost, we believe in the essential good that ethical mining provides society, and recognize that optimal ESG performance in the mining and metals business drives operational and reputational performance. Triple Flag does not invest in mines that use child labor, forced labor or riverine tailings disposal.

Approach

We conduct robust due diligence with the objective of investing in projects and companies that are well-managed and where the range of ESG aspects and impacts are such that the mine operates sustainably over the long term to protect our investments and reputation, along with those of our stakeholders and investors.

Our due diligence process includes an assessment of our counterparties’ environmental and local stakeholder management in order to promote the long-term prosperity of operations for all stakeholders.

Our investment in host communities

Triple Flag is selective when it comes to choosing partners with whom it will enter into royalty or streaming agreements.

While Triple Flag does not necessarily invest directly in each of the communities where it holds agreements, through proper due diligence Triple Flag ensures that its counterparties engage in responsible, environmentally and socially conscious business practices.

Reflective of the long-term partnership with Royal Bafokeng Platinum envisaged as part of the stream, Triple Flag has undertaken to complement the current bursary scheme administered by RBPlat with a fully-funded scholarship program to support undergraduates from families of employees and doorstep communities. The scholarship will support the graduation of more than 50 young engineers, geologists and other technical professions over the life of the Stream, through a US$100,000 per annum investment by Triple Flag, starting in the upcoming 2020 academic year. This scholarship is a reflection of RBPlat’s and Triple Flag’s support for host communities.

Our investment at home

Triple Flag’s Board has elected that a US$1,500 donation per board meeting attended will be made to each director’s charity of choice on their behalf in lieu of receiving cash board meeting fees.

Since inception, Triple Flag has been a strong advocate for and supporter of Children’s Wish Foundation (now Make-A-Wish Canada), specifically the Trees of Joy initiative. Trees of Joy inspires teams to create a little holiday magic for children diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. The funds raised help to grant the next heartfelt wish. Aside from donating our own tree each year to a deserving child (and their family), Triple Flag has brought together numerous local mining companies, financial institutions and various vendors to take part in this great cause.

Triple Flag supports Young Mining Professionals (“YMP”), a growing international association of mining professionals based in major mining centres across the world, that share the goal of advancing the global profile and leadership of the mining and exploration industry. In 2019 Triple Flag sponsored the YMP Scholarship Fund Charity Golf Tournament.
